‘Must be nice to work at a gym. You have all the time in the world to workout, the equipment and classes are at your fingertips, you get a free membership and you can even get paid to workout!’
Well, our leaders do agree it’s nice to work at a gym, but not because it makes it easy on them to keep up their healthy habits. You’ll find most of our leaders spending so many hours doing the work that allows the rest of us to workout at our convenience that it makes getting in their own workout challenging! They work hard at trying to maintain healthy habits, but let’s be real, it’s HARD to fit in your fit…and yes, even while working at the gym. We have to remember that the gym is their workplace so when it’s time to stop working, it can be hard to escape into their own workout staying at onsite.
We asked our General Managers to share what their favorite exercise or workout is when they get a chance to jump in.
Here’s what they said:
This is Heather, Helena’s General Manager. Heather says her favorite exercise is… “Deadlifts! Because it challenges more muscle groups, strengthens the core, and you can’t cheat on a deadlift!” Yea, no cheating Heather. Looking good, girl!
This is Colter, Billings’ General Manager. Colter says, “My favorite exercise is side lateral raises! Shoulder day is my favorite day because I can feel more of a mind muscle connection with my shoulder muscles compared to any other muscle group. I like to start off with the heavy movements first for lower reps then towards the end of the workout increase the reps and lower the weight to push as much blood into the shoulders as possible. Here is one of my favorite shoulder day workouts.”
Military Barbell Press
Military Press Dumbbell
Superset (5 times)
Front Dumbbell Raises 15 reps
Side Lateral Raises 15 reps
Face Pulls 15 reps
Superset (4 times)
Hang Cleans 5 reps
Barbell Shrugs 10 reps
OUCH, Colter! We’ll feel that one for sure!
Brenda, the General Manager from Missoula keeps it real. “My favorite (love to hate) workout is the stairclimber. I strive to do 60 minutes 4X per week and sometimes more. I also enjoy weight training but, true confession here, I need to make more time for that. Muscle strength is vital for all age groups, especially mine. Working out is my best medicine for mental strength. I combine that with humor and I’m good to go! The saying goes “Laughter is the best medicine” but, fitness is too.”
Now that’s some sound advice! Thanks, Brenda!
Amber, the General Manager in Butte, says, “I love spinning because I can get a full body workout! To be completely honest, if I do not find a spin class, I will find whatever reason I can to skip a workout 😉 I love those aspects of a class…the participants and the motivation you get.”
Group Fitness is popular for those exact reasons….the accountability, community, motivation, and rockin’ workout. Amber’s on to something!
Maybe you’re inspired by Colter’s shoulders or the no-cheat exercise that Heather shared. Or, maybe you’ve not tried a Cycling/Spinning class and look forward to adding that in! Brenda’s combo of laughter and fitness for mental health AND physical health is STRONG. Thanks to these GM’s for being our leaders, our examples and for keeping it real for the rest of us.
We look forward to introducing you to the rest of our leader team soon. They’ve got more tricks and truths up their sleeves.
